Surveys around the world have shown that at least 13% of the population suffers from migraine headaches. Although recognized as a medical condition, migraines are often not diagnosed. They should not be underestimated as they cause great discomfort and often make it impossible to continue with normal activities, making it impossible to enjoy even moments of relaxation and quiet. The percentage of migraine sufferers in Italy is very high. Statistics show that 6,5 million people have frequent migraine attacks and only a few receive adequate treatment.
There are various triggers that can set off a migraine:
Of all the cranial nerves, “irritation” of the Trigeminal nerve is the main cause of headaches. The terminal branches of the trigeminal nerve pass through a facial muscle known as the corrugator supercilii, which puts pressure on the trigeminal nerve when it contracts continuously, causing the blood vessels to dilate and thus bringing on a migraine. Migraine treatment is therefore based on a resection of the corrugator supercilii. The results speak for themselves:
The patient completes a questionnaire before undergoing a careful medical examination followed by an interview with the surgeon. A test is then conducted using botulinum toxin type A. This step is fundamental because it simulates the results of the operation.
Surgical treatment for migraines is performed under general anaesthetic or sedation and the patient will be able to return to normal daily routine within a few days.
In 1999 in the United States a revolutionary new method was developed for the treatment of migraines. After a pre-treatment with botox, today migraines can be successfully and definitively treated with a simple surgical procedure.
